The Eagles upended Southern States Athletic Conference foe Lee (Tenn.) 8-4 on Thursday night in the second semifinal at the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series, eliminating the Flames and securing themselves a date with No. 7 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) on Thursdaynight.

Faulkner is unbeaten heading into Game 18, meaning that the host Warriors would need to beat the Eagles twice to claim their 17th national title.

“The last few steps up the mountain are always the hardest, and our biggest challenge lies ahead of us,” Faulkner coach Patrick McCarthy said. “We have the toughest task of any team in the NAIA in facing Lewis-Clark State in front of their packed house. We have to maintain our composure and stick to our approach.”

Faulkner used a pair of four run innings and a complete-game gem from starter Julian Esquibel to eliminate Lee.

The Eagles pushed across four in the top of the sixth to chase Lee ace Myles Smith (11-4), taking a 4-1 lead.

“I think sticking to our approach against Myles Smith was a key for us,” McCarthy said. “We tried to lay off his breaking stuff and hoped we would speed up to his fastball. It worked out for us that we got his pitch count up and he flattened out on three days’ rest.”

Lee made it a one-run game in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single off the bat of catcher Danny Canela, but Faulkner tacked on four more in the top of the eighth.

Dauris Holguin and Zak Colby each had two-run doubles in that frame to help the Eagles open up a five-run lead.

That was more than enough for Esquibel, who notched his fifth complete game of the season for Faulkner, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

“Julian deserves all of the success he’s had,” McCarthy said. “He’s gotten better and better every time he’s gone out and has shown that he can perform in big games.”

Colby, Sergio Sanchez and Cayleb Coker each had multi-hit games for the Eagles, while Brady Renner notched a pair of base hits for Lee.

The Flames’ Brandon Rader hit his fourth home run of the season in the third inning to account for Lee’s first run in a losing cause.

LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) No. 7 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) had six individual post multi-hit performances, as the Warriors advance to the championship game of the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series with a 13-7 win over No. 3 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) Wednesday evening at Harris Field.

With the win, Lewis-Clark State (45-14) advances to the World Series final for the 21st time. The Warriors await the result of No. 1 Faulkner (Ala.) and No. 2 Lee (Tenn.). If Faulkner wins, Lewis-Clark State will face the Eaglestomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. PDT in Game 18. If Lee wins, the Warriors automatically jump to Game 19 because they would be the last remaining team to receive a bye. Embry-Riddle (50-15) is eliminated from the event.

“We’re thrilled to be in the position we’re in,” said Lewis-Clark State head coach Jeremiah Robbins. “We’re still controlling our own destiny, which is a great thing to be able to say at this point in the season. Our team is so tough. Our guys just prepare themselves the right way. They’re always ready.”

Lewis-Clark State, who entered the game leading in the NAIA in hits and runs scored per game, flexed its offensive muscles once again with 16 hits. The Warriors have reached double figure hits in nine of their last 11 games, including 3-of-4 at the World Series.

Lewis-Clark State’s Brady Steiger improved his team leading batting average to .433 with a 3-for-4 effort, including two runs scored and two RBI. Joining Steiger with three hits was Brian Corliss (3-for-3), who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the fifth.

Bobby Joe Tannehill continued his hot hitting at the World Series with a 2-for-3, two RBI and two runs scored effort. Tannehill currently leads the World Series in batting average at .579 (11-for-19), while taking over first-place in RBI with eight.

Anthony Armanino (11-3) earned his second win at the World Series, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in five innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Sal Arena and Garrett Wilson split the final four innings for Lewis-Clark State, each allowing one run.

Eric Peterson’s grounder to first base that skipped away from the Embry-Riddle first baseman and into right field, punctuated a five-run top of the fifth that gave Lewis-Clark State the lead for good, 7-3.

Lewis-Clark State jumped out to a quick 1-0 advantage in the third on a check-swing single by Steiger that drove in Kyle Knigge from second base.

Embry-Riddle answered in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run by Kyle Chastain, who was previously hitless at this year’s World Series. The blast is his third of the season.

The Warriors added a homer of their own by Cody Lavalli to knot the score at two apiece, however Embry-Riddle got an RBI by Mike Gragilla to give the Eagles back a one-run, 3-2, lead after four innings.

Following Lewis-Clark State’s five-run fifth, the Warriors tacked on two runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth to seal the victory.

Embry-Riddle added a run in the bottom of the ninth to close the contest.

On bright spot for the Eagles was the play of third baseman Jack Lemon. Lemon, who finished the contest 2-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored, extended his hitting streak to 10 games on a single to left field in the fifth inning.

Sergio Sanchez and David Bishop also homered for Faulkner, which improved to 3-0 in the tournament. Faulkner will play fellow Southern States Athletic Conference member No. 2 Lee (Tenn.) at 6:30 p.m. PDT in one of two semifinals on Wednesday.

Lewis-Clark State and Embry-Riddle will battle in the other semifinal at 3 p.m. Both teams now have one loss.

Kendrick’s second home run of the season cleared the left-center field fence at Harris Field, spearheading a four-run bottom of the fifth that helped Faulkner (54-11) take its first lead of the game at 5-3.

Tyler Carter pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief to hold the lead for Faulkner, which handed Embry-Riddle starter Kevin Maloney (12-2) just the second defeat of his collegiate career.

Embry-Riddle (50-14) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Lemon, but Faulkner answered quickly on Sanchez’s eighth homer of the season in the bottom of the second.

Embry-Riddle got an RBI single from Jordan Johnson and a sacrifice fly by Adam Cellini in the fourth to chase Faulkner starter Jeremy Holcombe, but Carter held Embry-Riddle scoreless the rest of the way.

Faulkner piled on late against the Embry-Riddle bullpen, scoring five more runs in the bottom of the eighth against three relievers.

Michael Cruz and Sanchez had RBI doubles in the frame before Bishop’s two-run homer to straightaway center field effectively iced it for Faulkner.

Justin Hallmark pitched a scoreless ninth to send Faulkner into the semifinals as the tournament’s lone unbeaten team.

Each team had eight hits in the contest, with Sanchez, Bishop and Kendrick notching two apiece for Faulkner. Kevin Lindheim and Johnson had multi-hit games for Embry-Riddle.

LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) No. 2 Lee (Tenn.) continued its hot hitting at the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series, cruising to a 12-2 win over No. 9 Missouri Baptist Tuesday afternoon at Harris Field.

With the win, Lee improves to 51-11 on the season and advances to the championship semifinals. The Flames will play at either 3 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. PDT tomorrow. Pairings for the semifinals will be determined by the World Series tournament committee and will be posted later today on www.NAIA.org. Missouri Baptist (37-14), who was making its first-ever appearance at the Worlds Series, is eliminated from the championship.

Lee seized control of the contest in the bottom of the first when Josh Silver and Corey Davis hit solo home runs to give the Flames the early 2-0 lead. The deep fly ties Davis for the team lead with nine, while Silver rests with four.

The Flames added another five runs in the fifth to make it 7-2. Back-to-back Missouri Baptist errors to start the inning set the table for Lee, who plated the first run on a Silver single to center field. Davis chipped in with his second RBI of the game after Danny Canela walked. A pair of sac flies and another single accounted for the remainder of Lee’s five-run frame.

The sixth looked much like the fifth for Lee, as they added another four runs to bring its total to 11-0. Brady Renner’s two-run home run highlighted the inning. The blast is his fourth of the season.

Missouri Baptist scored its first run of the contest when Ryan Gunhouse tripled to bring home Patrick Johnson, who had reached earlier on a single.

Lee tallied its final run of the game in the bottom seventh.

Missouri Baptist wrapped up the scoring with a run in the top of the eighth.

Davis and Silver led the way for the Flames offense. Davis extended his hit streak to eight games with a 2-for-3 effort. Davis is hitting .500 in three games at the World Series, including two doubles, one home run and one triple. Silver finished the contest 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.

Lee starter Clint Terry improved to 11-1 on the season. The left-hander surrendered one run on nine hits in seven innings of work. He also had five strikeouts in the effort.

LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) Jake Shirley lined a single through the hole at second base to plate the final run of the Warriors’ ninth inning comeback, as No. 7 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) eliminated No. 5 The Master’s (Calif.), 3-2, Tuesdayafternoon at the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series at Harris Field.

Lewis-Clark State (44-14) advances into the semifinals of the championship and will play at either 3 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. PDT tomorrow. Pairing for the semifinals will be determined by the World Series tournament committee and will be posted later today on www.NAIA.org. The Master’s (44-17), who is making its first World Series appearance since 2000 and second overall, is eliminated from the championship.

The Warrior bats had been held relatively in check through the first eight innings, with Lewis-Clark State grounding into four double plays – a season-high for The Master’s – and only mustering five hits. However, with their backs against the wall, the Warrior hitters came alive.

Kyle Blackwell, who extended his current hitting streak to a season-high eight games with a single in the fourth, took a pitch off the left shoulder to leadoff the frame. A walk and sacrifice bunt placed the tying run at second base with Kyle Knigge due up.

Knigge continued his hot hitting with a bullet up the middle that narrowly missed left foot of The Master’s pitcher. The second hit batsman of the inning placed pinch runner Kevin Knapp in scoring position as the winning run. Shirley worked the count to three balls and one strike before hitting the game-winner into right field.

The Mustangs scored first in the contest when Joe Riddle shot a single up the middle to plate Steve Karkenny, who reached two hitters earlier on his 22nd double of the year.

The Master’s added another insurance run in the top of the eighth, but it proved not enough.

James Scott (7-5) received the loss for The Master’s despite holding the Warriors in check for 8.1 innings. He scattered six hits and allowed three runs – all in the ninth.

David Murillo (5-0) earned the win in 2.2 innings of relief of Seth Haehl, who finished the game surrendering one run on five hits in 6.1 innings.

LEWISTON, Idaho (Box Score) – Embry-Riddle (Fla.), the third seed in the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series, pulled off a stunning comeback in the late innings against No. 2 seed Lee (Tenn.) on Monday night with the help of a crushing outfield error, advancing to play top-seeded Faulkner (Ala.) in the winner’s bracket on Tuesday.

The Eagles (50-13), scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a two-run deficit and send the Flames (50-11) into an elimination game with No. 9 seed Missouri Baptist on Tuesday.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth and Lee hanging onto a 4-2 advantage with the bases loaded, Embry-Riddle catcher Adam Cellini lofted a routine fly ball into shallow right field that was dropped, clearing the bases and putting the Eagles on top for the first time in the game.

Lee got the potential tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth, but Embry-Riddle’s Jon Rapose got the Flames’ Justin Silver to ground out to second base and end the game.

Rapose (5-1) got the victory with 1.2 innings of relief of starter Stetson Nelson, who tossed 7.1 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits.

Embry-Riddle got the victory with only two base hits — a pair of singles by third baseman Jeff Lemon in the first and eighth innings – and all five of its runs were unearned.

Lee pitchers walked four batters and hit three others, and both teams ran themselves out of rallies on the basepaths.

After both teams scored single runs in their first at-bats, Lee went ahead in the top of the fifth on Corey Davis’ screaming two-run double off the left field wall that drove home Silver and Brady Renner to give the Flames a 3-1 lead.

Embry-Riddle got a run back in the seventh, but could have had more as an Eagle runner was doubled off after straying too far from second base on a fly ball off the bat of Kyle Chastain.

Lee widened its lead to 4-2 in the top of the eighth when Karsten Strieby’s RBI single up the middle drove home Davis, who doubled to right-center. Strieby advanced to third on a single by Derrick Pitts, but this time it was the Flames who had a runner doubled off to end a rally.

Davis and Pitts each had two hits for Lee, which got 6.1 innings of one-hit ball from starter Jose Samayoa in a no-decision. Alex Moore fell to 1-3 with the loss and did not record an out in the seventh inning, allowing three unearned runs and walking a pair.

LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) No. 1 Faulkner (Ala.) overcame four errors and 12 left on base to grind out a 7-6 win over No. 5 The Master’s (Calif.) and advance in the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series Monday evening at Harris Field.

With the victory, Faulkner (53-11) awaits the winner of No. 2 Lee (Tenn.) and No. 3 Embry-Riddle (Fla.). The Eagles, who prior to 2013 had not won a game at the World Series, are 2-0 and next scheduled to play tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. PDT. The Master’s (44-16) falls into the elimination bracket and will play No. 7 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)Tuesday at 12 p.m.

Faulkner’s Will Dismukes (12-2) picked up his 12th victory of the season despite some command issues early in the game. He allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out eight and walking four. With the performance, Dismukes has now thrown at least seven innings in 11-of-16 starts this season. He also eclipsed the 100 strikeout plateau, now resting with 106 on the year.

Designated hitter Michael Cruz registered his second multi-hit game of the championship for the Eagles, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. The effort extends his current hitting streak to nine games. Through two games in Lewiston, Cruz is hitting .625, which ranks fourth amongst players at the World Series.

Faulkner wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, claiming a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Zak Colby opened the inning with a bunt for a base hit before pinch runner Brook Boudreaux stole second and later advanced to third on Luis Sanchez’s ground out to second base. Cruz took advantage of the RBI opportunity, slapping a 0-1 pitch down the first base line that squirted through the legs of the Mustang first baseman. Cruz would advance to second, but was stranded.

The Eagles stretched their lead to 3-0 in the fifth. Luis Sanchez set the table with his seventh triple of the season to open the inning. Cruz again made the best of the situation, driving the first pitch he saw through the box and into center field. A bases loaded, one out single by Cayleb Croker brought home the second run of the inning.

Faulkner added another three insurance runs in the seventh, when David Bishop blasted a 3-run home run over the left field fence. The home run is Bishop’s ninth of the season and first since April 25.

Despite the contest looking firmly in the grasp of the Eagles, The Master’s continued to fight, cutting the deficit to 7-3 with a three run eighth. Jonathan Popadics opened the frame with a double to left center and advanced to third on a throwing error by the Faulkner shortstop. He was plated two pitches later on a Steve Karkenny single. The Mustangs scored the second of three runs on a Chris Talley double and utilized an overthrow by the Eagle third baseman to wrap up the scoring in the inning.

The Master’s scored another three runs in the bottom of the ninth on three hits and an error by Faulkner, but stranded the tying run as Cody Harris’ hot shot was snagged by the Faulkner first baseman.

The Master’s had three individuals post a multi-hit game, highlighted by Talley’s two hit, two RBI performance. Popadics and Sam Robinson were the others with two hits in the contest.

Mustang starter Tyler Elrod (8-5) received the loss. The right-hander allowed six runs on 13 hits, while striking out eight and walking one.

LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) No. 7 Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) registered its second-straight game of 10-plus hits to overtake No. 4 Northwood (Texas), 9-5, in elimination bracket action at the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series Monday afternoon at Harris Field.

With the win, Lewis-Clark State (43-14) advances to play the loser of No. 1 Faulkner (Ala.) and No. 5 The Master’s (Calif.) tomorrow at 12 p.m. PDT. Northwood, who was making its first-ever appearance at the World Series, is eliminated and ends its season with a 44-13 record.

The bottom three hitters in the Lewis-Clark State lineup led the charge for the Warriors, hitting a combined 6-for-12 (.500) in the game with five RBI. Prior to the game, the lower third of the batting order had only one hit at the World Series.

Warrior shortstop Bobby Joe Tannehill posted a career-high five hits with one RBI and one run scored to lead the squad, while Kyle Knigge and Jacob Cano, who both were hitless at the World Series prior to Northwood, were 3-for-4 and 2-for-5, respectively.

Starting pitcher Steve Thompson (5-5) earned the victory after scattering five hits and allowing four runs (two earned) over six innings. He also had five strikeouts and four walks in the effort. Garrett Wilson pitched the final 1.2 innings of the ball game to receive his first save of the season.

Lewis-Clark State jumped on the Knights early, scoring one run in the first, two in the second and one in the third to open the contest with a 4-0 lead. Northwood responded with two in the bottom half of the third when Herb Romero drove in Jordan Lewis and Bryan Kinard plated Logan Brumley on a ground out to second base.

Two innings later, a double by Eric Peterson followed by a Knigge single two batters later extended the Lewis-Clark State lead out to 5-2.

However, Northwood kept fighting and loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh. The Knights took advantage of the opportunity of a Lewis-Clark State error when the Warrior’s shortstop overthrew the first baseman leading to a run. Northwood added another on a sac fly to make it 5-4.

Lewis-Clark State tacked on another three runs in the top of the eighth and one in the ninth to seal the victory.

Jordan Lewis led Northwood with three hits and two runs scored, while Estevan Hernandez added two hits. Clayton Woodruff (5-3) allowed three runs on four hits in the first 1.2 innings of the ball game to receive the loss.

LEWISTON, Idaho – (Box Score) Missouri Baptist outfielder Ryan Gunhouse slapped a single over the head of the Rogers State (Okla.) third baseman to score Patrick Johnson for second base, as the No. 9 Spartans rallied to knock off the defending national runner-up and tenth seeded Hillcats, 5-4, Monday afternoon in game nine of the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series at Harris Field.

With the win, Missouri Baptist (37-13), who is making its first appearance at the World Series, advances to play the loser of No. 3 Embry-Riddle (Fla.) and No. 2 Lee (Tenn.) at3 p.m. PDT on Tuesday. Rogers State (36-24) is eliminated from the championship and falls to 6-4 all-time in Lewiston.

Johnson, the American Midwest Conference Player of the Year, picked the perfect time to extend his hitting streak to eight games as the senior shortstop beat out a dribbler to first base for an infield single and advanced to second when the Rogers State first baseman threw it over the head of the covering pitcher to start the ninth. Gunhouse wasted no time driving in Johnson with a single on the next pitch.

Matt Marsh threw three innings of scoreless relief to earn the win and improve to 3-4 on the season. Marsh has now thrown four innings, allowed no runs and only two hits at this year’s World Series.

Rogers State drew first blood when Ramcy Lora deposited a 2-2 pitch over the center field fence for a 3-run home run. The deep ball is Ramcy’s team leading fifth of the season and first since March 30. Cody Campbell and Emmanuel De La Cruz, who reached previously on a walk and single, scored on the play giving the Hillcats a 3-0 lead after 3.5 innings.

Missouri Baptist cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a Mykol Sostarich RBI ground out to second base. Dan Harper set the table in the inning with a leadoff double – the Spartans first extra base hit in the World Series so far.

The Hillcats added another run in the top of the sixth, however the Spartans continued to charge, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame when Joseph Stropp shot a bases loaded single up the middle to make it a one run game 4-3.

Missouri Baptist drew even in the eighth as pinch runner Geoff MacDonald reached home on Mykol Sostarich’s single through the left side. The RBI for Sostartich is his first since April 13.

Errors hampered Rogers State the entire game, as the Hillcats committed a season-high five.

Hillcat starting pitcher Kyle Duncan surrendered 12 of the first 14 batters he faced, but received no decision after being chased from the game with one out in the sixth. Mason Marquette and Jesse Baird made appearances in relief of Duncan. Baird (3-3) was credited with the loss.

Two bright spots for Rogers State were centerfielder Eric Baker and De La Cruz. Baker, who walked three times, reached base in his ninth-straight game at the World Series, while De La Cruz finished the game 3-for-4 with three singles. The three-hit performance is the third for De La Cruz in 80 career games with the Hillcats.

For Missouri Baptist, catcher Garrett Vail extended his hitting streak to nine games and finished 1-for-4.
